ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the game concept for our new game and creates a simple design for it. It makes a prototype FPS-style game with emphasis on exploration and puzzles, with a little bit of shooting as well. FPSs have a reputation for violence, but the genre is large, and the violence can be anywhere from nonexistent to disturbing and all-encompassing. Many FPSs aren’t so much about the shooting but about experiencing a story and living an adventure. Game genre terminology changes frequently, at least every decade. In recent years, major hit console games have tended toward supporting a third-person perspective rather than just a first-person view. The most common technique is to break up the world into chunks and to then only display the chunks that are near the player.
