ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we review the key pulmonary treatable traits contributing to important outcomes in asthma: airflow limitation, type-2 airway inflammation, disordered airway immunity (allergy, altered immunity to infectious agents), an altered cough reflex and structural changes to the airway and lung. We consider the mechanisms, methods used to detect the trait, treatments and the likely impact of treatment. We finish with a discussion of common clinical patterns of asthma.
