ABSTRACT

Over the last decade the morality of the construction industry and the direction of its moral compass have come under increased scrutiny. This book covers the important issue of how to recognise unethical practices, discussing dilemmas about what is right and wrong and how to address such adversities. This chapter introduces the book, which covers a diverse range of subject areas with the overarching focus on professional ethics. This includes areas such as socially responsible procurement, the increasing importance of corporate social responsibility, recent changes to European procurement directives, and changes to professional body ethical requirements and guidance. It examines the ethical dilemmas that construction professionals are likely to encounter during pre-construction, as projects are undertaken, and when the building is handed over to the client and maintained.
