ABSTRACT

2.1 Introduction

The most widely applied shallow water equations models are still two-dimensional depth averaged. Due to this fact, the main part of this study deals with the application of data assimilation methods in two-dimensional models. Initially, a sequential data assimilation technique has been applied to the hydrodynamic module of the MIKE 21 (Abbott et al. [1]) modelling system. The purely deterministic version of this model has been already used for forecasting, so that the combination with data assimilation techniques was a necessary step forward to improve the forecast.
