ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on alternative methodologies and a flavour of the rich response to the problems of the waterfall mode. Prior to systems development methods there were no accepted approaches or ways of designing and implementing information systems. Many systems were developed in an ad hoc fashion with little regard for business needs or usability. Engineering tradition formed the basis for development and there was no experience of the peculiarities of information systems as opposed to other engineering constructions. There have been two main streams in the ideas about modern systems development methodologies. On the one hand there have been ideas about the role of individuals, their position in the organisation and the problems which arise when these and other similar issues are ignored. The chapter considers methodologies which have arisen in response to these ideas focusing on two: ethics and multiview.
