ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a review of software developed to date that has contributed towards integration and encapsulation of information on groundwater pollution problems. GroundWater Quality Management (GWQM) has also been substantially influenced by software development. Encoded numerical groundwater models are the main tools used to assist in decision-making for groundwater pollution problems. GWQM comprises the whole set of technical, institutional, legal and operational activities. The concept that some areas are more likely than others to become contaminated has led to the use of the terminology ‘groundwater vulnerability’ to contamination. Numerous techniques have been developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence to assist in knowledge acquisition, systematisation, formalisation and encapsulation. Due to the development of computer science much has been done in the electronic integration of software tools used in GWQM.
