ABSTRACT

In the long run, the binding up of the wounds on Earth and the exploration of Mars might go hand in hand, each activity aiding the other. The authors found that a mass of 344 metric tonnes would be needed in leo and the space vehicle would fly to Mars in 601 days. One attempt to describe a manned mission to Mars which is particularly interesting because it is European is the work of Dr Harry Ruppe, one of the V2 scientists who worked closely with Dr Werner von Braun and then moved to the United States. Between the three modules there would be a huge rocket with a mass of 784 tonnes, whose purpose would be to decelerate the spacecraft so that it fell into orbit round Mars on 11 July 1997, after a voyage of 240 days. However, it is a mission which lacks credibility, tor it is tar too ambitious for early stages of manned Mars exploration.
