ABSTRACT

The electronics industry has become increasingly vital, especially for export-oriented, high-technology developing countries like Taiwan. This chapter considers Taiwan’s electronics industry in terms of three sectors: computers (information electronics), communications and consumer electronics. The emphasis of the personal computer (PC) industry has gradually evolved from the highest value-added sector to the lowest. The strategy for PC makers is to expand the application area by integrating computers with consumer electronics and communications technologies. The substantial development of the information industry and its product market reflect the continuous advance of information technology, the increasing speed of product release, a shorter product life-cycle, a substantial growth in demand from various types of users, and the integration of information technology into everyday active.
