ABSTRACT

Flat panel displays (FPDs) are increasingly important in information electronics products. The largest demand for FPDs is for use in computers, mainly portable systems such as laptops, notebooks, and handheld PDAs. The global FPD industry uses a diverse set of technologies to satisfy a broad array of applications. The dominant technology is the liquid crystal displays (LCD), which itself comes in many forms the primary variations are the more advanced active matrix LCD and the basic passive matrix LCD. The lack of a materials and equipment infrastructure in Taiwan has kept the cost of production high because spending on equipment and components comprises the majority of FPD manufacturing costs. Taiwanese firms are trying to develop an indigenous supply of notebook screens to lessen their dependence on foreign-made displays. In order to reduce the production cost and stabilize the manufacturing process, the development of LCD peripheral industries is required to maintain the global competitiveness of Taiwanese LCD firms.
