ABSTRACT

From the distance in time and space Potternewton has the misty air of a mid-nineteenth-century daguerreotype. Potternewton is or was, predominantly, one of the respectable working-class-and-lower-middle-class areas, about a mile north of the city centre. Even Potternewton is clear. Not sharp; it is Hunslet which is sharp. From this distance in time and space Potternewton has the misty air of a mid-nineteenth-century daguerreotype. From Sheepscar to Potternewton Lane passed, amid the acres of lower-middle-class housing, a small patch of what had once been just-middle-class housing and was respectable. Especially at Whitsuntide, for working-class people in the North the traditional time for giving children new clothes.
