ABSTRACT

Cuban military personnel continue to play a direct and key role in Nicaragua’s defensive preparations and counterinsurgency planning. These efforts, combined with flows of Soviet military assistance, maintained the possibility of intensified conflict in Nicaragua. In examining the problems of building socialism, it was suggested that concrete examples be drawn from the unit itself, “keeping in mind that military work is nothing more than another kind of general labor". In addition, the Soviets and personnel from Eastern bloc nations have helped to construct several electronic listening sites, military garrisons, and airfields. Some military leaders have promoted the themes of Fidel Castro’s rectification campaign at meetings and assemblies. Internationalism and internationalist duty—whether civilian or military—continue to be a major cornerstone of Cuba’s role in the world. This coincides with Fidel Castro’s global visions and it serves to sustain Cuba’s leadership among the body of Third World nations.
