ABSTRACT

People and machines are systemic parts of a global system. Technology is supposed to be developed to improve safety, efficiency, and comfort, but humanity is barely considered when the goal is only financial. The technology, organizations, and people (TOP) model was developed during early 2000 to provide design teams with a framework that considers these three entities from the beginning of design and all along the life cycle of a system. The TOP model is a simple framework that supports co-design of TOP’s activities and jobs. Technical documentation complexity is very interesting to be tested because it is directly linked to the explanation of artifact complexity. The TOP model leads to studying system complexity in terms of flexibility, maturity, and governance. People are the various stakeholders of organizations around the technology that is considered. They can be designers, engineers, developers, certifiers, maintainers, operators or users, trainers, and dismantlers.
