ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to identify and address the issues facing the construction industry of ‘shortermism’ and the ‘productivity problem’. All research to date focuses upon productivity in construction on a macro level, with a gap in current literature regarding the micro-level productivity of construction professionals. This is despite recent construction reports emphasising professional development as key for a prosperous construction industry. The research portrayed explores the continuing professional development (CPD) perceptions and practices of construction professionals. A questionnaire distributed to Quantity Surveyors (QSs) revealed the perceptions QSs have of their employers’ attitudes towards CPD. By understanding current practices, these findings contribute to an important gap in current research, highlight important CPD lessons all construction professionals need to be cognisant of, and set some important recommendations for the direction of future research in the area of construction industry CPD research.
