ABSTRACT

The construction industry is essential to the very fabric of the UK with the impacts of the industry felt in all areas of society. However, there have been longstanding calls from numerous professional bodies and industry reports for change. These reports focus on several areas of the construction industry that could be improved – from productivity to the methods of construction used, and from collaboration to the use of innovative and disruptive technology. Ultimately what underpins all the industry problems identified and the recommendations proposed is the need for professional development of the construction industry workforce. This chapter illustrates the link between the problems in the construction industry and the need for construction industry professionals to be empowered to take responsibility for their own development. This will help ensure construction industry professionals have the skill sets required to meet the challenges of the future.
