ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to size and model heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Of the three tutorials, one explains the effect of HVAC operating criteria on energy consumption. Often thermostats of HVAC systems are operated by sensing the air temperature, and the same criterion is also used for the evaluation of thermal comfort hours through simulation. This tutorial shows the difference in alternative approaches using the case of ‘operative temperature’, that is, a combination of air temperature and mean radiant temperature. The second tutorial explains the method of sizing HVAC systems, and the third tutorial covers the effect of using different algorithms for performing HVAC calculations in the simulation.
