ABSTRACT

Periodization should consist of a 2–3 month, pre-season phase where athletes are lifting heavy weights and running long slow distance, followed by a competitive phase where there are three 4 week microcycles comprising 3 weeks of increasing volume and 1 week of decreased volume. Microcycles should be progressively increased in volume over the course of 3 weeks and 3 months. This then should be followed by a tapering phase of 3–4 weeks before major competitions at the end of the season. If wrestlers are competing in wrestling events in the “Off-Season” they should keep the scheme listed above in addition to wrestling in usually Freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions.
