ABSTRACT

Female wrestlers are a unique breed, indeed. Additionally, they are prone to the Female Athlete Triad which is reduced energy availability, amenorrhea, and reduced bone mineral density. A major factor in the Female Athlete Triad is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). This is a relative imbalance between energy output and energy intake or excessive exercise coupled with reduced energy intake. A question arises with regard to female wrestlers: should they lift weights? The answer is a resounding yes. High correlations have been found in women between whole body fat-free mass and time to fatigue at 100% of VO2max an intensity and duration that is similar to a wrestling match. That is the more muscle they had, the more fatigue resistant they were.
