ABSTRACT

The wave equation governs many physical problems such as the vibrations of a spring or membrane, acoustic scattering, etc. When it comes to mathematical modeling, probably the most investigated are the direct and inverse acoustic scattering problems. On the other hand, inverse source/force problems for the hyperbolic wave equation have been less investigated. In this chapter, the unknown forcing function is assumed to depend only upon the space variable(s) or the time variable in order to ensure uniqueness of solution. Several methods based on iterative and non-iterative regularization are described for solving such linear but ill-posed inverse wave force problems.
