Benefit-cost analysis is a method for estimating the profitability of disease control programs over an extended period of time. Benefit-cost analysis is a method for estimating the profitability of disease control programs over an extended period of time. The scenario tree is a structure representing all possible pathways from the starting point to the outcome often used to support claims of freedom from disease or infection. The objective of disease prevention is to forestall disease transmission or the occurrence of clinical signs. Disease control is aimed at reducing the frequency of disease to a tolerable level. It is usually accomplished through treatment of affected individuals, as during a routine mastitis control program in a dairy. Disease control focuses primarily on the source and mode of transmission of a disease agent. The level of artificially induced herd immunity required to eradicate disease is inversely related to the etiologic agent's intrinsic reproductive number.
