ABSTRACT

Connective tissues have a variety of forms and functions. There are four basic types of tissues in the body, and each has a different function and different properties depending on the function. The four major types of tissues are connective, epithelial, muscular, and nervous. These tissues compose all of the organs and structures in the body. Epithelial tissue covers the body surface and forms the lining for most internal cavities. Epithelial tissues are composed of layers of cells that cover organ surfaces. Connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in the body and is the most widely distributed tissue type. Nervous tissue composes the central nervous system, brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. In muscle tissue, muscle cells contain contractile filaments that move past each other and change the size of the cell. Biological tissues range in thickness and complexity. The simplest are membranes or sheets and combine to form organs, which then combine to form a system.
