ABSTRACT

The Aroma of Tea (2006) is Dudok de Wit’s first semi-abstract short film, produced in his home country and painted entirely with organic tea. The trajectory of a small brown dot, clearly on a journey through meanders of life, is timed on the solemn rhythm of Italian baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerti grossi opus 6. The film is the director’s clear homage to the beauty and elegance of Japanese calligraphy, the culture of Zen Buddhism and Japanese art in general. The Aroma of Tea is Dudok de Wit’s most personal film, a sort of an autobiographical narrative, representing a spontaneous graphical preamble for his first feature film The Red Turtle (2016) which is the sum of his artistic achievements.
