ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how to flesh out a broad concept into a concept document, mainly from a production perspective. Over time, the characters and world are defined; the gameplay mechanics, genre, and key features are fleshed out; and the hardware platform is chosen. All the things are needed to create a full-concept treatment for the game. The core game loop is the main set of actions that the player does in the game. These key actions form the framework of the gameplay mechanics: for example, running, aiming, shooting, gathering, building, or defending. A game’s genre ties into the gameplay loop and refers to the type of challenges encountered during play. The target audience for each platform will also impact the game concept. The character avatar is controlled by the player and interacts with NPCs encountered during the game. The controls are the main way in which the player interacts with the game.
