ABSTRACT

Concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) members are composite members which consist of inner skin, outer steel skin and concrete filled in the annulus. Figure 1.1 shows some typical CFDST cross sections. Either the inner skin or the outer skin can be circular, rectangular or square hollow sections. The outer steel skin can be either carbon steel or stainless steel. This type of composite structure derives from the conventional concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structure and inherits the advantages of the CFST structure. This sandwiched cross section has been proved to have high stiffness with enhanced stability under external pressure. This section of the book introduces the applications of CFST structures briefly, and then presents an application of CFDST structures.
