ABSTRACT

Urban water supply used to only deal with potable water, as it is safe to drink, pleasant to taste and suitable for other domestic purposes. The traditional practice was to supply the same potable water of high standard for all the purposes, as it was thought that to supply separate waters for potable and non-potable purposes would not be cost effective. To overcome such acute situations, contemporary urban water authorities are supplying recycled water for non-potable purposes with the aim of reducing demand on potable water. For the planning and design of a water supply system for a city/locality, the very first step is the estimation of water demand. In regions where moderate to heavy rainfall occurs, a dam/reservoir is constructed across the river in order to hold rainwater and then to treat and supply the water to the residents/households.
