ABSTRACT

Based on the mode of vibration introduced in tool or workpiece, Vibration-Assisted Machining (VAM) can be performed as one-dimensional or two-dimensional arrangements. VAM system can be characterized the upfeed index Fup which is the distance traveled by the tool relative to the work in one cycle. The horizontal position x and velocity relative to the work are again as described above. Although the process is ultrasonic-assisted milling (UAM), some researchers named it ultrasonic-assisted grinding as the cutting tool is abrasive bonded and not conventional milling cutters. The performance obtained from UAM is nearly six to ten times higher than that of the conventional milling. On the other hand, a grinding wheel distributes wear over numerous grits and is capable of re-sharpening itself depending on the wheel grade and type of bond. The grinding wheel condition changes as grits wear and chips accumulate in the spaces between fine grits. Wheel loading deteriorates of surface finish and increases grinding forces and temperature.
