ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces an efficient system identification method based on a vector autoregressive moving average (VARMA) model. The equivalence between a structural dynamic system and a VARMA model is first derived so that the dynamics of a structure can be represented by a VARMA model. The optimal values of the VARMA parameter matrices are obtained in close form given measured output responses only. By using the equivalent relationship between a structural dynamic system and a VARMA model, the analytical formulas of the structural modal parameters can be obtained. Working directly on the measured output responses, system identification of full-scale structures can be done in a short time. The proposed method is demonstrated by measured data from a laboratory shear building and a full-scale office building.
