ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 is dedicated to the spacecraft attitude control system using control moment gyros. As already explained in Chapter 10, for given desired torques obtained in Chapter 9, there are singular points where one cannot find gimbal speeds of the CMGs to achieve the desired torques. Although many approximation methods are developed, none of them provides exactly desired torques. This chapter presents a different method uniquely designed for spacecraft control system using CMGs. Section 14.1 establishes the spacecraft model which includes the variable-speed CMGs. Section 14.2 discusses spacecraft attitude control using VSCMGs. Since the problem under consideration is a linear time-varying system, two relevant control methods, gain scheduling control and MPC control are considered. Analysis is performed, which leads to the selection of MPC control in this design problem. Robust pole assignment design is justified for its use in the MPC design. Simulation test is performed in section 14.3 to support the claim of the design method.
