ABSTRACT

This chapter covers using R to construct common plots involving numeric data, as well as a variety of further figure enhancing tips with respect to customizing the axes, manipulating plotting symbols and superimposing two different plots. Examples of constructing basic and customized frequency, density, and relative frequency histograms are given, and ways to manipulate these to obtain cumulative frequency histograms, frequency polygons, and ogives are demonstrated. Variations of constructing basic and enhanced boxplots are given along with how such plots should be interpreted. Similarly provided are examples of constructing stripcharts as well as superimposing these on boxplots. Normal probability QQ-plots are discussed in depth, including their construction and their interpretations. Also included is a discussion and an example of constructing a QQ-plot for a non-normal distribution, one that finds use in Chapter 17.
