ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the potential threat vectors for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships, their implications for security, and potential countermeasures that may be undertaken to minimize their risk and to overcome these threats. The shipping company designates a Company Security Officer in accordance with nation state and International Maritime Organization guidelines with several areas where minimal competencies are established. The purpose of physical security is to protect the safety of personnel, physical assets and facilities of a company or organization. Routine security measures such as physical and electronic checks of personal credentials, facial recognition, fingerprint and/or iris scans and other methods may be performed while underway, in ports and during maintenance to deny access to unauthorized personnel. The topic of maritime cyber security has become very important and much guidance exists for implementing effective programs. Similar requirements to maintain physical and cyber security exist at shoreside installations such as the remote control center.
