ABSTRACT

The range of construction materials used to build our infrastructure is large, as choices are often influenced by availability and economy. The broad range of materials utilised to construct and maintain infrastructure is exposed to specific environments during the asset's life. Impact of ageing on built infrastructure and on the social and economic fabric is significant. This chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book deals the common argument; the comparison between Design Life with Service Life and where ageing impacts on both. It provides a review of future materials, methods, the impacts and future means of dealing with ageing infrastructure. The book covers the mechanisms of ageing. It plays a significant role in the deterioration of construction materials and therefore impacts on ageing. The book addresses ageing infrastructure for whole-of-life engineering.
