ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the rationale and considerations for the monitoring of infrastructure health and associated intervention strategies. In light of the earlier, the key objective of health monitoring is, thus, to obtain information on performance of the assets during their life and on their ability to provide the required levels of service so that decisions can be made for their effective and efficient management. The performance and condition of infrastructure assets are typically assessed through regular and/or ad-hoc monitoring activities on site that can include checks, surveys and testing. Risk management is at the core of asset management and a key process to determine the scope and timing of any health monitoring regime. Reliability-centred maintenance is considered good practice to enable risk-based decision-making. The chapter outlines the importance for considerations of balancing asset performance, risk and cost to drive the development of intervention strategies so they provides best value to organisations and their stakeholders.
