ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the basic understanding of wave propagation in solid isotropic and anisotropic elastic media. Ultrasonic NDE of materials and computational NDE need understanding of wave propagation both in fluids and solids. In this chapter, first basic terminologies associated with wave propagation are discussed. Different types of waves in solids and fluids are introduced. Wave interaction at the interfaces is briefly analyzed using mathematical treatments. Physics of wave propagation in fluid, isotropic solid structures, and anisotropic solid media are discussed and their differences are explained. In anisotropic media, necessity of slowness profiles in oppose to the velocity profiles is discussed. In this chapter, predominantly wave propagation in bulk media is considered.
