ABSTRACT

Advancement of digital technology has enabled businesses to run tasks and store information more conveniently, especially for those workers that are allocated at decentralized work sites. A decentralized work site is an alternative work location which may be in a different geographical region than the organization’s main office. Hence, advancements in information technology (IT) facilities and affordable prices to acquire organizations allow more and more workers to be able to work remotely. On the other hand, most businesses are leveraging on this technology as a competitive advantage. The advancement of IT also enables job offerings for human skills in using and maintaining the facilities, which allow business functions especially human resource management (HRM) to be more streamlined in the sharing and transferring of information. The challenges in HRM today is exist. This chapter discus and reveals on telecommuting, the perspective from management information systems (MIS) which includes six areas of focus: (1) data, (2) software, (3) hardware, (4) people, (5) telecommunication, and (6) policies; then highlight the benefits and challenges of telecommuting from both managers’ and employees’ perspectives.
