ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we attempt to chronicle how cyberattacks have accelerated in recent years in their scope, purpose of attack, intensity of attack, and size of attack population.

From the hack of the United States government's Office of Personnel Management capturing millions of documents with personal information; to the widespread distributed denial of service attacks; to the emergence of WikiLeaks in revealing information to the public; to the development of ransomware designed to extort money; to the many phishing attacks designed to get users to reveal personal information; to Stuxnet, which destroyed the Iranian nuclear power facility; to the impact on the United States 2016 presidential election, we will see the impact of these increased attacks on the world's cybercommunity.
