ABSTRACT

Everything related to events that harm people, environment, or property, causing physical, psychological, or moral damages, properties or environmental degradation, and various types of losses can be the object of safety study. Any being, animate or inanimate, natural or artificial, concrete or abstract, real or fictitious, can be candidate for safety study. Beliefs, values, and team morale are abstract objects. The evaluation of system performance requires benchmarks, the standards for productivity, quality, safety, and environmental preservation. The sensors measure the attributes of the system and inform the controller. Safety is a variable inversely proportional to risk. The higher the risk, the lower the safety, and vice versa. Increasing safety means reducing risk. The word safety may denote the safety function or the organization aimed at promoting the risk and emergency control. Safety function reduces damage and losses caused by aggressive agents. Productivity losses and low-product quality are not the main concerns.
