ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how time-related aspects of the project evolve from scope definition and are translated into a first cut schedule for the project. There are many more management issues to deal with related to the production of a final schedule, but for take the introductory deterministic model view as the conceptual process by which scope is translated into an activity list, and then that view evolves into duration and sequence specifications. The chapter also describes several common estimating techniques and the environment where each is most effective. It outlines the basic mechanics required to generate a project schedule. The chapter focuses on fixed time estimates and dealt little with the reality that time estimates in fact should be viewed as a probability distribution with ranges. The network models are not perfect for showing how the project will be executed, but they represent the underlying scheduling model and best illustrate the method to introduce the fundamental aspects of time management.
