ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the contributions that can be made by the environmental consultant to the identification and remediation of indoor air quality (IAQ) problems. Health-related effects from an indoor air pollutant can result from a single exposure, multiple exposures, or prolonged, constant exposures. Symptoms typically include irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Long-term exposure to indoor contaminants can lead to more serious illnesses, including respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer. The IAQ investigations are ordinarily triggered by real or perceived health impacts or odor complaints by a resident or a building worker. It is helpful to conceptualize indoor air pollutants as originating either inside the building or outside the building and migrating into the building. Many indoor air pollutants are the byproducts of incomplete combustion of heating fuel. Dust and particulates can contain contaminants, such as heavy metals and asbestos, which can create their own set of problems.
