ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Complex Systems Methodology for determining the appropriate amount of rigor when applying each of the processes. This rigor is referred to as tailoring. Tailoring decisions depend on the life cycle stage of the project, life cycle stages of the products within the project and impacts of risk drivers. The chapter describes the factors that influence tailoring choices and introduces the concept of tailoring by life cycle phases. It provides direction on how to apply tailoring and explains the risks associated with tailoring. Tailoring is a widely misunderstood process; however, it is one that is critical to the appropriate application of project management and systems engineering. Tailoring of processes is most often associated more with traditional methods of project management and systems engineering than with flexible methods. Tailoring affects the documentation requirements of the stakeholder engagement plan and associated communications management plan.
