This chapter is to a large extent based on the work of Sigurd Trier [61] and Bernhard Specht [57, 56]. Jorgen Nocedal’s book [34] has also been a resource.

Formulation of a design optimization problem involves transcribing a verbal description of the problem into a well-defined mathematical statement in terms of design variables, objective function and constraints. In the following, each of these will be described.
