ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we shall discuss Ardipithecus ramidus, the oldest fossil hominid with a preserved skeleton. Her discoverer, Tim White, decided this species was different enough from the Australopiths to assign a new genus to it. Ardi’s foot had not evolved to the point where she had five inline toes like the Australopiths. Ardi is interesting because she was still not an efficient bipedal walker 4.4 million years ago, but she was on her way, compared to her ancestors.
