ABSTRACT

Major evolutionary patterns in organismal groups are driven by the need to obtain food/energy and the need to reproduce, thus passing their genes to the next generation. This chapter examines how dinosaurs achieved the latter, and covers questions of mate selection and reproductive mode. It also covers evidence for egg production and includes evidence for strategies employed by different dinosaur groups. Similarities and differences in reproduction between dinosaurs and their avian relatives are explored as well as speculation on when these differences arose. Finally, the evidence for parental care in dinosaur groups and the evolutionary significance of this strategy are discussed.
