ABSTRACT

After blending and packaging, the ways in which finished lubricants are stored can have a significant effect on their quality prior to delivery to customers.

All lubricant blending plants will have a warehouse, even if only to store or manufacture empty packages and closures prior to filling, as well as materials for cardboard boxes. In almost all cases, a lubricant blending plant will store small packs of blended lubricants, particularly plastic bottles, tin cans, drums, kegs and intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), indoors in its warehouse. Drums and IBCs can also be stored outdoors, but only with the correct facilities. Additives and special base oils may also need to be stored in the warehouse.

The requirements in each case are that the material should be protected from contamination and should not deteriorate in storage, and account has been taken of health, safety and environmental matters. Chapter 13 focuses on the storage facilities for blended lubricants, the warehouse facilities and the systems for managing the warehouse.
