ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 discusses the Perspectives Perimeter, a tool for identifying and communicating a set of viewpoints, from which to perceive issues, problems and situations and points out the benefits of using a Perspectives Perimeter for examining a situation. If you’ve heard people say, “Let’s make sure we’re on the same page”, or engineers say, “Let’s make sure we are on the same wavelength”, you can consider the Perspectives Perimeter as the spectrum of wavelengths, or the book containing the pages. The chapter provides two examples of Perspectives Perimeters. The first example is the nine Holistic Thinking Perspectives (HTP). The HTPs provide a systemic and systematic tool for applying systems thinking to gain an understanding of the problematic situation and then going beyond systems thinking to determine the nature of the problem and create a solution that will remedy the undesirability in the problematic situation. The second example is the ‘Knowledge–Application of knowledge’ Perspectives Perimeter that helps students distinguish the difference between knowledge and the application of knowledge so they can demonstrate their higher-order cognitive skills. The chapter also points out where six other Perspectives Perimeters are discussed in the book.
