ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 discusses nine templates used in project management and systems engineering. The Annotated Outline is a template for maximising completeness and correctness of a document by providing prospective readers with the contents before the document is written. The original Idea Storage Templates provide a location to store ideas after an ideation session. The Problem Formulation Template is the basic tool in the systems approach to problem-solving. It helps formulate the problem and conceptualise solutions and the solution development process, which makes the problem solver think through the problem and solution before beginning the process of tackling the problem. The generic functional template of a system helps ensure completeness of the system by incorporating the concept of inheritance. The template for a document helps maximize the completeness of a document by providing guidelines for what should be in the document. The generic template for a presentation and the example templates for a student exercise presentation and a management review presentation provide for better presentations by providing places for the types of information that need to be presented. The Waterfall Chart is a template for the states in the System Development Process that provides a template for Management by Objectives (MBO).
