ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses 19 tools used for problem-solving in project management. They range from simple to complex. The chapter includes a number of original tools including Categorized Requirements In Process (CRIP) Charts that provide a measurement of technical process as well as the opportunity to prevent impending problems in the project and the Enhanced Traffic Light (ETL) Chart which uses a similar time derivative approach to the CRIP Chart to display project process and also indicate that there may be problems in the project. Other tools not thought of as project management tools in the current non-systems approach mentioned in this chapter are the Golden Rule, Just-In-Time (JIT) decision-making, the Technology Availability Window of Opportunity (TAWOO), the Thank You, and the Three Streams of Activities. The chapter introduces Work Packages as the basis for an integrated project database replacing the Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) used in the current non-systems paradigm. Traditional tools discussed are Earned Value Analysis (EVA), financial budgets, Gantt Charts, Management by Exception (MBE), Management by Objectives (MBO) and how to integrate MBO into the planning process, Mission Statements, PERT Charts, Project Plans, timelines and the Waterfall Chart.
