ABSTRACT
This chapter explores health and safety legislation and explores how to handle hazardous situations. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 tells that employers must systematically examine the workplace, the work activity and the management of safety in the establishment through a process of risk assessments. The chapter examines the electrical safety requirements when working in the building services industry and considers the safety requirements for working with gases and heat-producing equipment. It outlines the safety requirements when using access equipment and illustrates the safety requirements for working safely in confined spaces and excavation. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Requirements for Electrical Installations are non-statutory regulations. The IET Regulations tell precisely how to carry out the electrical work safely in order to meet the statutory requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations. The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 are issued by the Department of Trade and Industry.
