ABSTRACT

Patent searches at the advanced level comprise a powerful knowledge for patentability analysis, elaboration of protection strategies for novel inventions, patent drafting, development of new products, analysis of product viability, and market analysis. In this context, this chapter presents theoretical and practical concepts of the use of two important advanced search platforms: Derwent and Orbit. The fundamentals are presented in a simple and practical way, enabling the comprehension by graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and professionals from intellectual property and research and development areas. This chapter explains how to access and understand both patent databases and presents two fundamental concepts: the use of wildcard characters and joint operators in the keyword combination, enabling accurate and broad searches. The search for patents using the patent number, inventor’s name, assignee, and title, among others, is also presented. This chapter clarifies to the reader important concepts for the elaboration of advanced search strategies through practical examples using Derwent and Orbit. This study has been developed to allow the simultaneous use of notebook and the reading of the presented search examples, allowing better fixing of the concepts.
