ABSTRACT

As a patent has a different structure compared with scientific publications, appropriately reading a patent requires some training. This chapter gives some advice to efficiently read a patent text, which can be long and contain many details. The patent text, in particular the front page, contains important information, such as numbers, codes, names, and texts, which can be confusing for someone who is not familiar with patents. This chapter explains each section and part of a patent, and how the reader should obtain the key information. Special attention is given to how to read the claims, the most important item of a patent. This chapter aims to make the reader familiar with the proper reading of a patent, in an efficient manner.
