ABSTRACT

A data visualization portrays only one of many possibilities for each visual aesthetic. You can customize virtually any aspect of a visualization such as the width of plotted lines, font sizes, and color. Organize these customizations according to both persistence and scope. A temporary modification applies only to a single visualization. A persistent modification applies to all subsequent visualizations unless subsequently modified. Regarding scope, the modification can apply to a single characteristic of the visualization or to an entire set of characteristics that together define a theme. Customizing a visualization often includes the use of color, explored next.
