ABSTRACT

This chapter characterizes the Central Chilean subregion, provides its endemic and characteristic taxa and discusses its relationships. A track analysis based on weevil species showed that the Central Chilean subregion was related to the Maule province of the Subantarctic subregion. Another track analysis based on weevil species, a cladistic biogeographical analysis based on plant and animal taxa and fossil evidence indicated that this subregion was closely related to the Subantarctic subregion. The Central Chilean subregion comprises two provinces: Coquimban and Santiagan. A parsimony analysis of endemicity and a cladistic biogeographical analysis based on plant and animal species showed that it is the sister area of the Santiagan province. Another cladistic biogeographical analysis, based on species of Diptera, showed the Coquimban province as sister area to a clade comprising the Santiagan, Maule, Valdivian Forest, Magellanic Forest and Falkland Islands provinces.
